A Carnival in the Dunes
Imagine a festival where the stage is the desert and spotlight is the sun. That’s what the Desert Festival in Jaisalmer feels like. Held every year in February, just before the full moon, this three-day festival is a vibrant showcase of the Rajasthani culture and pride, set against the backdrop of golden sand dunes and ancient forts.
Celebration of a Legend
Locals say that the festival began as a tribute to Lord Krishna, who foretold that the clan of a Yadav would rule this land one day. When Rao Jaisal, a descendent of Krishna, founded Jaisalmer, the people celebrated his divine lineage – and the tradition of festivity continues till date.
Locals dress in their finest traditional attire, with elaborate turbans and flowing ghagras (skirts), to participate in a variety of competitions and displays;
- Camel Polo and Camel Parades
- Folk dance – telling tales of romance and battles
- Kalbelia and Ghoomar dance performances
- Turban Tying and Mustache competition – a display of Rajput pride
- Puppet shows, fire dancers, jugglers
- Handicraft Bazaar, mirror work, leather goods
The evenings are magical. Picture fire dancers twirling under the stars while folk singers fill the air with soulful tunes. It is Rajasthan in its most unfiltered form.
Must-Visit During the Festival
While in Jaisalmer, don’t miss exploring the majestic Jaisalmer fort, also called the Sonar Quila, which glows like gold in the morning sun. Inside, you’ll find ancient Jain Temple, winding lane, and beautifully carved haveli. The Sam Sand Dunes, located just outside the city, are where most of the festival’s performances take place. Camel rides at sunset here are a must.
